A space for stories
Human beings share stories. Story telling is one of our deepest characteristics and needs. That’s how we understand our experience; that’s how we pass on the wisdom of each generation to the next. The best way to understand a culture is to learn its stories.
Like many great teachers, Jesus told stories – and for centuries, we have found new layers of meaning in them. The events of his life also constitute stories – and again, we find rich and surprising depths of meaning in them, generation after generation.
We gay people have our stories. Sometimes they’re hard to tell, because they hurt; sometimes they’re jokes; sometimes they’re ironic, or erotic, or angry, or tragic. In their great variety, they reflect the fullness and richness of our many lives. One of the glories of this present age is our freedom to tell those stories, not only to each other, but to the world.
It seems to me that our spiritual stories are less often told.
I think that gay people are richly endowed with spiritual gifts – but for various reasons many of us find ourselves cut off from those gifts. So why not create a safe place where anyone who wishes can share a spiritual story?
Stories about a mentor who was God at a certain point in your life; about a religious experience that brought deep change; about healing; about the church, or parents, or other authority figures and what they did, or failed to do, and the results – good or bad; about what God is saying to you right now, or his silence, or his non-existence. Does he exist? Is he asleep?
So I propose this space as a place of such sharing. I hope it will be useful; that you, or others like you, will take the plunge and share your experience, as it is, to the degree that feels right, and always in complete anonymity; that together we will create a record of the gay experience of God and the things of God.
